Trouble Signing in to Admin Site

For the last couple of months, I have experienced problems signing in to the admin site. I enter my id and password and then nothing. In some cases there has been a major delay in the admin site coming up.

After additional troubleshooting, I discovered that I can go to another page on the site after admin sign in and am able to edit those pages without problem. Then I can go back to the home page and the edit feature is available. There must be something on the home page that is conflicting with the script.
It may be a javascript error. I had this problem recently on a 5.6 install. Have you updated the site software recently?
Thanks for the response. I have not upgraded the site lately. Generally when I log in to the admin site (when i can get in). What's the best way to determine if I need an update?
