Registration/login for users

Still new at this and guess I'm missing something. Have tried searching but come up with very little.
I want to add registration/login on the Home screen (other than the login to edit link) with unregistered guest limited to what pages/content they can view.
Checked out the getting started guide, searched all over but can't find any step by step type instructions.
